What Fruits Are Non Acidic?

What Fruits Are Non Acidic?

Foods are either acidic, neutral or nonacidic, based on the ash residue the food forms after digestion. The level of acidity or alkalinity in a food is measured by pH level, with the scale running from one to 14. Nonacidic, or alkaline, foods measure from seven up on the pH scale. Acidic foods can be nonacidic after being digested. The ash residue forming after digestion can elevate pH levels in your body as the minerals left behind help to remove hydrogen ions, which creates an alkalizing effect.

pH Levels

You can achieve the proper pH balance between acidity and alkalinity by controlling the concentration of hydrogen ions in your system. This can be achieved by consuming the proper mix of acidic and alkaline foods. The Wolfe Clinic recommends eating 75 percent alkalizing and 25 percent acidifying foods by volume. Bloating, water retention, heartburn and constipation with diarrhea are consistent with unbalanced pH levels.

Citrus Fruits

Lemons taste acidic, but the fruit yields an alkalizing effect after being digested. As your body assimilates the citrus fruit, the end product carries an alkaline pH level.

Limes, oranges and grapefruit are other nonacidic citrus fruits which are high on the pH scale after being digested.

Other Fruits

Bananas, sour cherries, apricots and peaches are alkaline fruits. These fruits help to remove hydrogen ions from your body, making the foods alkalizing. Tomatoes, avocados, currants and pears are also nonacidic fruits. Many vegetables are alkalizing. Red cabbage, spinach, cayenne pepper, zucchini and fresh cucumbers are nonacidic foods that can help to balance low pH levels.

Acidic Fruits

Stay away from fruits such as blueberries, cranberries, plums, prunes and canned or glazed fruits if you seek to avoid acidic foods to balance your pH levels. Eating increased amounts of these foods combined with emotional stress can form a buildup of acids in your system which can decrease your body's ability to absorb minerals and increase susceptibility to illness and fatigue.

Be sure to eat a diet rich with alkaline and acidic foods. This ensures that your body can recover effectively from stress by keeping acid levels of your blood in check.
