Iron-deficiency anemia is fairly common. This condition can be caused by a diet lacking in iron, loss of blood or improper iron absorption in the body. Iron-deficiency anemia can be treated with the right diet. This means eating more foods that are high in iron and avoiding or reducing intake of others.

    Red meat is well-known for its high iron content. Fish and chicken are other sources for carnivores. Vegetarians need not worry; greens, prunes, dried beans, whole grains, dried apricots, nuts and molasses are also iron-rich.

    Cast iron cookware allows foods to soak up more iron, allowing more of it to be delivered to the body. Iron supplements and iron-fortified foods can help fill in dietary gaps.

What to Avoid

    Certain foods and beverages can actually hamper the body's absorption of iron. Although eggs have been cited as good sources of iron, it can actually interfere with the absorption of iron. Drinking too much milk, especially by children, can have the same effect. Caffeinated drinks and bran should be avoided. Acid-reducing prescription medications can also stop the body from soaking up the iron it needs.
