High Alkaline Low Oxalate Foods

High Alkaline Low Oxalate Foods

Low oxalate foods are those that contain low levels of oxalates, chemicals commonly found in plants that can lead to conditions like inflammation of muscles tissues and kidney stones. Alkaline foods are those that are not acidic in nature. By eating high alkaline, low oxalate foods, you can decrease the amount of acid in your body, making you less susceptible to many types of stomach ailments.

Vegetables

Vegetables that are both high in alkalines and low in oxalates include potatoes, cabbage, iceburg lettuce, artichokes, fennel, broccoli, sprouts and squash. Low alkaline, high oxalate vegetables to avoid include spinach, eggplant, pickles, beets and onions.

Fruits

High alkaline, low oxalate fruits include raisins, bananas, apples, figs, watermelon, cantaloupe and avocado. On the other hand, fruits that you should avoid if you're on a high alkaline, low oxalate diet include grapefruit, oranges, pineapple, kiwi and cranberries.

Nuts

Certain types of nuts are both high alkaline and low oxalate too. For example, eat those such as Brazil nuts, almonds, sunflower seeds and chestnuts. Avoid nuts like walnuts, hazelnuts, peanuts, pecans, pumpkin seeds and pistachios.

Grains, Beans and Legumes

You should avoid most grains, beans and legumes if you're on a high alkaline, low oxalate diet; however, there are a few exceptions. You can eat corn, millet and buckwheat. Avoid most common types of grains and beans, such as wheat, barley, oats, rice, black beans, chick peas, lentils, Lima beans and soy beans.

Dairy

Dairy products are all over the spectrum when it comes to acidity and level of oxalates, but there are a few safe choices that are high in alkalines and low in oxalates. For example, you can eat butter, eggs, cottage cheese and yogurt. Avoid dairy foods like milk and most types of cheeses.

Meats

Chicken is one of the only high alkaline, low oxalate types of meats. For vegetarian, tofu is a safe choice as well. Avoid beef, pork, lamb and fish.

Sauces, Oils and Spices

Most types of vegetable oils, including olive oil, canola oil and safflower oil, are high alkaline, low oxalate foods. Nut-based oils like peanut and walnut oils are low alkaline foods. Spices like miso, curry, ginger, mustard and cinnamon are high alkaline, low oxalate foods too.
